Chiswick House

Chiswick House Grounds copy.jpgChiswick House is considered to be the finest surviving example of Palladian architecture in Britain, with superb collections of paintings and furniture. Its surrounding grounds claim to be the birthplace of the English landscape garden and are thought to be the most important historical landscapes in England and in Wales.
English Heritage are curators of the house and numerous artefacts in the grounds.
The house and grounds were formed in the mid 17th century by Sir Edward Seymour, and bought by the 1st Earl of Burlington in 1682. The ground contains areas of very great historical interest displaying the work of famous garden designers such as Kent, Bridgeman and Samual Lappidge. It is about to undergo extensive restoration using a Heritage Lottery Fund grant.
Highlights of Chiswick House Grounds include fine Italianate Gardens with classical statutary and the lovely Camellia Conservatory with wonderful camellias.
There are also tennis courts and a cricket square that can be used by members of the public.
